1 of 5 Die-Bentley-Die Stars – The Influence by Bentley Little.

Bentley Little can go fuck himself. Seriously, this book pissed me off. 416 pages. About 350 pages of bullshit and maybe 66 pages of actual story. So, seriously, go fuck yourself, Bentley Little. I hate your stupid face.

I read this book because someone recommended it. In fact, they said that “Anything by Bentley Little is fucked up and scary as shit”. Now, I want to hunt down the motherfucker that wrote that recommendation and have him explain to me how the fuck this book qualifies as “fucked up and scary as shit”. Because, goddamnit, it’s not.

Okay, it is kind of fucked up, sure. I mean when you actually get to the story part, the 66 pages of story are very fucked up and kind of interesting. That’s the only reason I finished the book. But, goddamnit. Why do I have to wade through 350 pages of utter horseshit in order to get to an actual story?

The ‘story’ bit, when you actually find it, is about a bunch of stupid white-trash red-necks who shoot off their guns, while at some party, and just happen to shoot a demon, or angel, or something, out of the sky. They hide it in the barn, and try to ignore it. But, of course it’s not going to be ignored.

Even though the creature is supposedly dead, it begins to influence the town somehow. Weird things start to happen. All the livestock up and die. The fields turn red. And there’s weird butterflies everywhere.

So yes, there is an actual story in the book somewhere, and it’s actually pretty good, once you get through the 350 pages of garbage. But, seriously, fuck Bentley Little in his stupid hack asshole.

I read a Bentley Little book once. It was awful. Never again. I would like to read some good horror. I’ve read some horror books that had some good parts, but I honestly don’t think I’ve ever read a horror book that didn’t get really stupid at some point.

Jack Ketchum and Edward Lee are my favorite horror authors, because they don’t fuck around. It’s just blood, and gore, and rape, and torture… Oh my! It’s fucking awesome. 😛

No. Blood, gore, rape, torture…that’s what I mean by stupid. The only thing worse than reading a story that only has that to offer is reading a story that only has that to offer by the likes of Bentley Little. Or worse, Richard Laymon.

So now, I have to ask you… What’s your idea of good horror?

Things you can punch in the face and hurt are not scary to me. Some asshole stalking some chick…not scary. Slasher flicks, torture porn…not scary. Doesn’t interest me. I can watch the local news for that.

Things you can’t explain or can’t understand are what is scary to me. The supernatural scares me because you can’t punch it in the face. The Shining (the movie, not the book) scares me. That to me is an example of the kind of horror I like. That scared the shit out of me.

Psychological torment can be interesting. I like the Blaire Witch Project for that reason. It wasn’t a scary movie, but it was a kind of scary psychological experiment. That said, the ending was scary in the same way a campfire story can be scary. I did like the spooky ending.

OMG, The Blair Witch Project was sweet. Saw that shit in the theatre. There was a line around the block to see that damn thing. The bit at the end, with the kid staring into the corner, just waiting for his turn to die… That was awesome.

Well, it’s not only rape and torture… I mean, The Girl Next Door is more psychological torment really. Sure, there’s rape and torture as well, but it still burned my brain with torment. I fucking loved it.
